Growth via Strategic Acquisition

The first outlet named ‘Donut King’ opened in March 1981 in Bondi, Sydney (Australia) while the first incarnation of ‘bb’s Café’ was commissioned in 1987. In 1989, RFG was established to operate both the Donut King and bb’s Café Brand Systems. The Donut King Brand System thrived under RFG’s stewardship and by 1996 there were 100 outlets across Australia.

After ten years successfully growing the two systems, RFG’s management team saw an opportunity to consolidate the franchising sector and set a clear objective for the Company: to become Australia’s leading multi-brand food franchise operator. The Company’s new strategic direction saw its rapid growth continue.

In the year 2006, the Company lodged its prospectus in respect of an underwritten Initial Public Offering and was successfully admitted to the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) with a market capitalisation of $72m. Within one year, the Company successfully undertook the ‘off market’ takeover of the BSX Listed Brumby’s Bakeries Holdings Ltd and acquired the Michel’s Patisserie Brand System.

In 2009, RFG was admitted to the S&P/ASX All Ordinaries Index, reflecting the Company’s consistent performance on the ASX.

In 2011, with more than 1,000 franchisees now under the Company’s stewardship, RFG commissioned its head office and state-of-the-art training facility in Southport on the Gold Coast. The same year, RFG continued its diversification through growth in the coffee wholesale market via the acquisition of New Zealand based Evolution Coffee Roasters.

RFG entered the year 2012 with a gap in its portfolio for a quick service restaurant (QSR) brand, and emerged as Australia’s largest gourmet pizza supplier, acquiring both Pizza Capers and Crust Gourmet Pizza.

The end of the year saw the Company enter another new market, mobile coffee, with the acquisition of New Zealand’s leading convenience coffee van franchise The Coffee Guy. RFG further solidified its position in this market with the acquisition of Cafe2U, the world’s leading mobile coffee van franchise, in late 2014.

In December 2014, RFG undertook its most transformative acquisition to date with the purchase of Gloria Jean’s Coffees, a leading, globally recognised coffee house franchise system. Adding more than 800 outlets to the network, Gloria Jean’s Coffees also provided RFG with significant inroads into international markets.

In February 2015 the Company’s coffee wholesale business was significantly expanded with the acquisition of Di Bella Coffee.

RFG’s appetite for growth continues to drive positive outcomes for the Group with expansion continuing across the globe.
